SWFCCP Announces New Active Against Cancer Funding!
Sheffield Wednesday F.C. Community Programme are pleased to announce that they have received funding from Weston Park Cancer Charity to support those who have been diagnosed with cancer.
Research shows that those in the South Yorkshire region often have worse outcomes when diagnosed with cancer than what is experienced nationally, with underlying poor health and economic deprivation being key factors in this.
Cancer related fatigue often leads to reduced cardiovascular and muscular fitness, with many reporting diminished psychological well-being during treatment. It was once thought that rest is best during treatment, but instead gentle paced activities are believed to be much more beneficial not just physically but mentally.
Over the next two years, SWFCCP will use the funding to hold coffee mornings, walking groups, and run fitness sessions dedicated to improving the physical well-being of those impacted by cancer, with assistance for the entirety of their journey, from pre-treatment to post-treatment phases.
These sessions will run at their newly established health suite at Jubilee Sports Club. The intention is to benefit participants not just in terms of their physical health but also their mental well-being, by connecting them with individuals who are/have gone/going through similar experiences. The physical exercises will be gentle and moderate, accommodating each person's own pace.
Sean Graves (Senior Health Officer) said, "We all know someone devastated by cancer, so we're honoured to be given this opportunity to support those going through such difficult circumstances."
SWFCCP’s first session will take place at Hillsborough Stadium, 10am-12pm on the 9th of October.
