BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport Coaching and Development/BTEC Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sport Coaching and Development

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate/Foundation Diploma in Sport is a CIMSPA-endorsed post-16 qualification which is the first year of a two-year Extended Diploma programme equivalent to three A-Levels. The course will provide you with the necessary skills for employment in a variety of sporting sectors such as sports coaching, teaching or fitness environments.
The course will consist of students studying a range of theory and practical based units such as Sports Coaching, Sports Development and Practical Sports Application. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake additional vocational qualifications to further enhance their personal career development such as coaching qualifications, tutorial sessions and enrichment trips. An individualised timetable will be provided to students enabling them to balance their academic studies with their football training and development.
The programme will be run from top quality facilities at our Education Hub based at Hillsborough Stadium with IT equipped classrooms and sports hall. Students also have the opportunity to train and play at top facilities including the Sheffield Wednesday FC training ground. Alongside this, new for 2023, students will have access to the Sheffield Wednesday Community Sports Complex, with 4G astroturf, classrooms and fitness suite based at the Jubilee Sports Club.
Football development programme
As part of their enrichment, students will take part in the football development programme where a carefully considered development programme of sessions will be created. Students will train twice a week at SWFCCP's training facility. Matchday’s will take place on a Wednesday in the EFL CEFA and FA Flexi-league. All students are expected to look professional in their SWFCCP training kit and matchday kits when travelling to games.
Students who show the ability to progress within the football industry, both locally and overseas, have a clear and proven pathway to do so. Many students have already progressed into semi-professional football, had trials at professional clubs and gained overseas scholarships in the USA. Throughout the year, we invite guest speakers from Academies, Scholarship programmes and semi-professional clubs to come in and speak with the students who are interested in pursuing this pathway.
Elite player programme
Talented students have the opportunity to take part in our Elite Player Programme where they will represent Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme in the U19’s National Youth League. They will get the chance to develop their footballing ability alongside studying a BTEC in Sport.
Our Elite Squad will be based at our brand new Sheffield Wednesday Community Sports Complex, with 4G astroturf, classrooms and fitness suite based at the Jubilee Sports Club. They will take part in daily training sessions in a professional, academy style environment delivered by UEFA B and UEFA A licence coaches and will compete in weekly fixtures against other professional football clubs across the country. Players may have the opportunity to train and play with SWFC academy.
Entry requirements
5+ GCSE’s grade 4 or above (or equivalent) including English Language and Maths*.
Passion for sports
*Those without either English or Maths will complete the Extended Certificate and not the Foundation Diploma.
Progression
Students completing the BTEC Level 3 Programme will progress to the Level 3 National Diploma/Extended Diploma in sport, equivalent to three A-Levels.

Students will also have the opportunity to undertake additional vocational qualifications to further enhance their personal career development such as coaching qualifications, tutorial sessions and enrichment trips. An individualised timetable will be provided to students enabling them to balance their academic studies with their football training and development.

Progression
Students completing the BTEC Level 3 Programme will be encouraged to move into higher education at university and are fully supported with their UCAS and bursary support applications. To date, students from our Football & Education programmes have gone on to excel with further studies across a wide range of courses and universities throughout the UK. However, many of our learners choose to continue their higher education studies with us at SWFCCP by undertaking a foundation degree in Community Football Coaching and Development with the option of an additional year to gain a BSc Hons in Football Community Coaching and Administration.
