BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Sport

Study Level: 1

Duration: 1 year

Location: SWFC - Hillsborough Stadium

Start dates: September

The BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Sport is a vocational course that is the first stepping stone for students interested in sports studies who want to combine education with training and playing sport to the highest level they are capable of.

This one year study programme provides learners to develop key transferable skills through studying a variety of units throughout the year including Training for Fitness, Coaching Skills in Sport and How Exercise Affects the Body. The BTEC Level 1 Introductory Diploma in Sport will take place over one year and is delivered through a series of innovative projects designed to develop your independent learning as the year progresses.

Students will also have the opportunity to undertake additional vocational qualifications to further enhance their personal career development such as coaching qualifications, tutorial sessions and enrichment trips. An individualised timetable will be provided to students enabling them to balance their academic studies with their football training and development.

Football development programme
As part of their enrichment, students will take part in the football development programme where a carefully considered development programme of sessions will be created. Students will train twice a week at SWFCCP's training facility. Matchday’s will take place on a Wednesday in the EFL CEFA and FA Flexi-league. All students are expected to look professional in their SWFCCP training kit and matchday kits when travelling to games. Students who show the ability to progress within the football industry, both locally and overseas, have a clear and proven pathway to do so. Many students have already progressed into semi-professional football, had trials at professional clubs and gained overseas scholarships in the USA. Throughout the year, we invite guest speakers from Academies, Scholarship programmes and semi-professional clubs to come in and speak with the students who are interested in pursuing this pathway.

Elite player programme

Talented students have the opportunity to take part in our Elite Player Programme where they will represent Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme in the U19’s National Youth League. They will get the chance to develop their footballing ability alongside studying a BTEC in Sport.

Our Elite Squad will be based at our brand new Sheffield Wednesday Community Sports Complex, with 4G astroturf, classrooms and fitness suite based at the Jubilee Sports Club. They will take part in daily training sessions in a professional, academy style environment delivered by UEFA B and UEFA A licence coaches and will compete in weekly fixtures against other professional football clubs across the country. Players may have the opportunity to train and play with SWFC academy.
