“Obesity is rising faster in the UK than in any other part of Europe. 22% of men are now obese (a three-fold increase since the 1980s) and 65% of men are categorized as being overweight or obese. The real fear is that this percentage figure will continually increase as there are few (if any) solutions available, that is until now!
Given the trends in weight gain coupled with the negative relationship of Covid-19 and obesity, the pressure on the NHS will become untenable. Furthermore, as there is strong evidence of the correlation between obesity and major chronic illnesses (i.e. heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and many cancers), a free supportive community based healthy lifestyle programme has never been more important.
There is a strong demand from individuals and communities for knowledge and practical skills to overcome obesity. Weight management services must stop the ‘one size fits all’ approach to delivery and start motivating populations to address lifestyle changes by being target specific.
Sheffield Wednesday FC ‘Fit Owls’ project focuses on our support base (our fans), specifically a concern of ours (especially in the current climate) is on the health our valued supporters. Therefore we have taken the same quality of dietary and exercise information available to our player’s and tailored it to meet our community’s health needs.
AND IT IS FOR YOU FOR FREE!
Delivery sessions run at Hillsborough Stadium in small groups (all covid-19 safeguards and guidelines strictly followed) and run for 90-mins – once a week for 12-weeks. All supportive material will be provided during each session, as will a progressive exercise class option.”
The next groups will start in September so if you would like to reserve a place on these programmes please send an e-mail to me ([email protected]) highlighting your preferred option; daytime session (11am) or evening session (6pm). Unfortunately we only have a total of 30-places available, so it will be allocated on a first come basis; however those unable to secure a place this time round, will be offered an option for January 2021.
